The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team under second-year head
coach Liz Grote appears to be hitting its mid-season stride just as it did
last season when it won six-straight, marking the program's longest winning
streak since the 1979 season.
On Thursday afternoon (April 5), Wooster ran its current win streak
to four by issuing its opponent all the way from California - the
University of Redlands - a 16-4 defeat.
The Scots have now outscored their last three opponents by a 57-8
margin, very similar to a stint during their long winning streak in 2000,
when they outscored three-straight opponents 58-12.
Wooster opened up the game against Redlands with a four-goal run,
but the visitors struck back with two quick scores to pull within 4-2
midway through the opening half.
Then, the Scots scored four of the final five goals of the first
stanza, including a devastating one for the Bulldogs to swallow when
sophomore Megan Kennedy hit the back of the net off a feed from classmate
Beth Hemminger with just five seconds to play.
Wooster carried that momentum into the second half, scoring eight
unanswered goals before Redlands tallied a meaningless late score.
Senior Katelyn Connolly continued her outstanding play of late, as
she outscored the Bulldogs by herself with five goals to move her season
total to 23 points on 12 goals and 11 assists. Also recording five points
in the win was Hemminger, who had a goal and four assists.
Kennedy finished with a pair of goals and a pair of assists,
followed in the scoring column by junior Emily White's three goals and
freshman Rachel Stevens' two goals and one assist.
Rounding out the Scot scoring were senior Jessica Critchlow, who
had the game's opening goal as well as an assist, junior Miriam Esber and
freshman Lizzie Newton with a goal apiece, and freshman Nicole Pritchard,
who had an assist.
All four of the Redlands' goals came via different players.
In goal, junior Kim Christensen made nine saves en route to
securing Wooster's victory, while the Bulldogs' Meghan Jupin and Subha
Prasad combined for 11 saves.
The Scots will try and keep their win streak alive this weekend,
when they travel to Springfield, Ohio, for a pair of contests. Wooster will
play Whittier College on Saturday, April 7, at 7 p.m., followed by a
meeting with Northwestern University's club team on Sunday, April 8, at
noon.
