Powered by five goals by junior Megan Sward, The College
of Wooster women's lacrosse team cruised to an 11-5 victory over
Ohio Wesleyan University in North Coast Athletic Conference action
Tuesday night from Delaware, Ohio. With the win, the Scots move
to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play, while the Battling Bishops
fall to 4-3 and 1-2 in the NCAC.
Junior attacker Helena Iaquinta began the day by converting
a free position shot just over a minute into the game, but Lila
Barzegar tied the game briefly at 27:08 with the first of her
three goals on the day. That's when Sward took over, as she converted
three shots over the next five minutes, including a free position
attempt at 21:12, to boost Wooster's lead to three (4-1).
After exchanging goals with the home team, the Scots threw in three
more scores over the final two minutes of the half, including free
position goals by Allison Harrod and Erica Frazier-Young.
Ohio Wesleyan picked up another score off a free position attempt
with 31 seconds remaining, but Wooster answered just eight seconds
later as Allison Mione converted on a pass from Sward to
put the Scots up 8-3 at the break.
Wooster maintained the momentum in the second half behind Sward,
who picked up goals four and five on the day, sandwiched around
a score by Ashley Arnold, just over ten minutes into the
period. Barzegar scored the only Bishop goals of the second half,
first at 13:30 and the last with just a second remaining to set
the final margin at six.
Sward picked up six points on the day with her five-goal, one-assist
performance and passed Tamra Barnes for 10th on Wooster's
all-time scoring list with 128 career points. Iaquinta added the
aforementioned goal and an assist, while Harrod threw in two scores.
Nicki Hunt played spectacular in goal for the Scots, turning
away a season-high 18 shots, while only allowing five goals (.783
save percentage).
Barzegar led Ohio Wesleyan with three goals and Jamie Blake
added two assists, while the rest of the Bishops' scoring was done
by Carrie Williams and Jana Kramer, who each scored
a goal.
Wooster will take a break from conference play to entertain the
University of Puget Sound at Carl Dale Memorial Field on Friday,
April 15, at 4 p.m. The game will be the first of three in Ohio
for the Loggers, who are making the trek from Tacoma, Wash., as
they also play at Denison University and Oberlin College on Saturday
and Sunday.
