The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team could not overcome
halftime deficits in each of its contests with Eastern Connecticut
State University and the University of Scranton in West Palm Beach,
Fla., and wound up on the wrong side of 9-8 and 19-13 decisions,
respectively. The Scots fall below .500 on the young season (1-2),
while Eastern improves to 1-4 and Scranton moves to 3-1.
On Wednesday, March 23, Wooster scored six unanswered goals in
the second half to cut Eastern's lead to one with just over three
minutes to play, but Warrior goalie Erin Calkins made two
of her game-high nine saves down the stretch to hold off the Scot
comeback.
Leading 3-2 in the first half, Eastern held Wooster scoreless for
26 minutes, while scoring six goals of its own, to move out in front
with 15 minutes left in the game.
Senior Ashley Arnold and freshman Allison Rubin led
the Scot comeback charge, each scoring two goals in the second half.
Arnold finished with four goals on the day, while junior Megan
Sward added a goal and an assist for the Scots. Sophomore Annie
Steward accounted for the other score.
Junior goalie Nicki Hunt made seven saves in the loss.
Mo Deegan led Eastern with three goals and three assists,
while Ashley Able and Kara Mastroianni each tallied
two goals.
Despite sunny, wind-free, 85-degree weather on Thursday, the gloom
continued for the Scots as Scranton jumped out to a 12-5 halftime
lead and held on in the second half for the six-goal win.
Helena Iaquinta led Wooster with five points coming on four
goals and an assist, while Erica Frazier-Young tallied two
scores and one helper. Arnold and Allison Harrod each added
two goals and Hunt made 12 saves in goal for the Scots.
Jackie Messantonio and Kelly Herlihy led the Scranton
offense with six goals a piece.
Next up for Wooster is a match up with the State University of
New York at Brockport on Saturday, April 2, at 1 p.m. |
