Despite wind, rain, and even some snow on Saturday afternoon at
Carl Dale Memorial Field, The College of Wooster women's lacrosse
team stayed hot against St. Vincent College, turning the Lady Bearcats
away with a 17-5 decision in a non-conference affair. The Scots
have won four consecutive games and improved to 6-3 overall on the
season, while St. Vincent falls to 4-6.
Running seemed to be the only way to stay warm amid the near-freezing
temperatures, and that is exactly what the Scots did, racing around
the Bearcat defenders for 10 goals in the first half. Junior Megan
Sward had a hand in half of those scores, first scoring back-to-back
goals at 20:55 and 15:19, and then closing out the half with consecutive
assists to Helena Iaquinta, Ashley Arnold, and Annie
Steward, respectively.
After falling behind 10-0 at the break, St. Vincent scored three
of the first four goals to open the second half, including a free
position goal by Jennifer Perestock at 26:30, to cut the
lead to 11-3.
But Wooster responded with another huge run, this time powered
by Arnold, who put in four goals and passed out two assists, both
to Sward, during a 6-0 spurt which ballooned the advantage to 14
(17-3) with under nine minutes to play. Perestock picked up two
more goals in the half to set the final margin.
Arnold and Sward paced the Scot offense with eight points each,
with the latter contributing five goals and a season-high three
assists, and the former collecting four goals and four assists.
Iaquinta finished with a hat trick with three goals and added two
assists, while Allison Harrod threw in two scores and dished
out one helper. Rounding out Wooster's scoring was Steward with
two goals and Allison Mione with one score.
Junior Nicki Hunt turned away 12 shots, while playing all
60 minutes in the net for the Scots.
Perestock led St. Vincent with three goals, while Shoko Asakura
added one score and one assist. Also scoring for the Bearcats was
Laura Fedor with one goal and Tearra Kuhn with one
assist.
Next up for Wooster will be another non-conference contest at Carl
Dale Memorial Field, this time with Notre Dame (Ohio) College on
Wednesday, April 27, at 4:30 p.m. |
