Despite doubling the number of shots of its opponent on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 3), The College of Wooster women's soccer team returned home with a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Heidelberg in a physical non-conference match that saw the teams combine for 22 fouls.
The Scots outshot the hosts 20-8, but the 'Berg goalie Julia Rose had an exceptional outing, recording 10 saves, including five in the final 12 minutes.
Wooster junior midfielder and tri-captain Sara Austin opened the game's scoring with an unassisted goal 18:55 into the contest. Less than 10 minutes later, Heidelberg's Casei Castner tied it at one with a goal off of a free kick from Katie Prophater.
The score remained 1-1 until early in the second half when a Scot handball in the goalie box proved costly, as the 'Berg's Molly Thronton converted a penalty kick. Wooster would tie the game at two, however, with junior Stephanie Hulke sliding the ball past Rose just nine minutes later.
Providing the winning margin with just under 13 minutes remaining in regulation was sophomore Jen Seminario off a feed from Thornton.
In goal for Wooster was sophomore Adrienne Walts, who registered five saves on the day.
Wooster hopes to rebound from its first loss since Oct. 16, 1999, a span of six matches, on Wednesday (Sept. 6), when it battles Penn State Behrend in Erie, Pa.
