After a pre-game ceremony in which The College of Wooster women's soccer team honored a former teammate, the Scots defeated John Carroll 3-1 in an emotion-filled home opener on Friday (Sept. 8).
Prior to the start of the match, there was a moment of silence, followed by every Wooster player placing a flower by the scoreboard to commemorate Christine Hulke, who died suddenly of cardiac arrest earlier this year (Feb. 26).
After a scoreless first half, the Scots controlled the ball for the earlier part of the second half, and finally scored on a penalty kick by sophomore Beth Hemminger in the 61st minute. Less than eight minutes later, Wooster took a 2-0 lead on a ball headed into the back of the net by senior Emily Cole off a pass from Stephanie Hulke, the twin sister of Christine.
The Blue Streaks answered a mere 59 seconds later with an unassisted goal off the foot of freshman Angie Smith. Any hopes of a John Carroll comeback were erased in the 80th minute when Cole tallied her second goal of the day, this time with an assist from freshman Lesley Hankin.
In goal, sophomore Adrienne Walts picked up her first win of the year, while making eight saves on the afternoon. On the other side of the field, senior Samantha Sommer produced a nine-save effort for John Carroll, which fell to 0-3-0.
Wooster, which raises its overall record to 2-2-0 on the season, will continue its homestand on Sunday (Sept. 10) when it faces Carthage in another non-conference match-up.
