In a showdown between Great Lakes Region women's soccer powers, host Allegheny College edged The College of Wooster 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 26).
Playing in unseasonably cool temperatures in Meadville, Pa., Allegheny, ranked ninth in the most recent regional poll, was able to hang on to the victory and improve to 5-3-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. On the other hand, Wooster, which was No. 7 in the region, slipped to 7-3-0 overall and to 1-1-0 in league play.
The Gators got two first-half goals, one early and one late, to take a commanding lead into halftime. First, junior Jane Och lit up the scoreboard eight minutes into the match with assists coming from sophomores Sharon Greene and Amanda McElfresh, followed by a goal off the foot of freshman Ashley Kittridge, who was assisted by freshman Nicole Hercules and sophomore Jill Malone.
The Scots would not go away quietly, though, as they did a better job of controlling play in the second half, outshooting Allegheny 4-2 in the second 45 minutes of play. One of those shots finally got past Gator goalie Joan Anderson in the 88th minute, as junior Gina Serrani scored her first goal of the season off a pass from classmate Nicole DeSantis.
In net for Wooster, junior Nicole Roman made three saves in the loss, while Anderson ended up stopping five Scot shots.
Wooster will try and rebound on Saturday (Sept. 29), but it will have its work cut out for it, as it hosts Denison University (6-2-0, 2-0-0 NCAC), which is ranked No. 17 in NCAA Division III, at 1 p.m.
