Women Booters Edge Solid Westminster Squad 2-1
 | Liz Martin |
In its final tune-up before North Coast Athletic Conference play
begins, The College of Wooster handed a strong Westminster College team a
2-1 defeat on a dreary and wet Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 19) at Carl Dale
Memorial Field.
Wooster's Liz Martin broke a 1-1 tie midway through the second half
with her fourth goal of the 2001 season. The senior dribbled right though
the Westminster defense and scored unassisted during the 66th minute, and
from that point, the Scots held on for the victory, wrapping up their
non-league slate at 6-2-0 and dropping the Lady Titans to 4-2-0 on the year.
Ranked No. 9 in the Great Lakes Region, Wooster took an early lead
when Beth Hemminger converted a penalty kick - the junior's fourth goal of
the year and 23rd of her career - with 20:37 remaining in the first half.
However, Westminster evened it up just 5:22 later, as senior Ashley Pyle
weaved her way through the Scot defense and found the back of the net.
Both goalkeepers played well in the difficult conditions, as
Wooster junior Nicole Roman and Lady Titan senior Sarah Morrison wound up
with six saves apiece.
Overall, the Scots outshot and outcornered Westminster 17-10 and
5-3, respectively.
Wooster will now put its focus on improving its tie for
fourth-place last year in the NCAC, starting with a tilt this Saturday
(Sept. 22) at home against Earlham College (1-2-1, 0-0-0 NCAC) at noon.
