The College of Wooster women's soccer team hosted the Wooster
Classic this past weekend (Sept. 1-2), and came away with a pair of
regulation wins to start off 2-0 for the first time since 1995.
On Saturday, Wooster followed up Mt. Union College's 2-1 victory
against Oberlin College at Carl Dale Memorial Field with a 1-0 shutout of
Walsh University.
The lone score came 21:24 into the match via junior Beth Hemminger
with an assist from classmate Nicole DeSantis, while goalkeeper Nicole
Roman, another member of the junior class, registered six saves en route to
her eighth career shutout.
Sunday's action was highlighted by an offensive onslaught by the
Scot booters, as they found the back of the net time and again during their
6-2 win over Mt. Union. Senior Stephanie Hulke led the way with two goals
and two assists, while junior Jessica Bacon tacked on two goals herself. In
fact, Bacon scored the match's first two tallies within the opening 7:48,
both of which were assisted by Hulke.
After the Purple Raiders had pulled within 3-2 early in the second
stanza, senior Liz Martin put away any thoughts of a comeback with her
first score of the new campaign. She scored after receiving a crossing pass
from Hemminger, giving her a second assist on the day after earlier helping
out on Hulke's first score which had made it a 3-1 game.
Wooster went on to add another Hulke goal via a penalty kick, and
later got an unassisted score off the foot of junior Lindsay Zella.
In goal, Roman split time with classmate Adrienne Walts, as Roman
made one save in the opening half and Walts had three in the second 45
minutes.
In other action on Sunday, Walsh eased past Oberlin 3-2.
