The College of Wooster only found the back of the net once during its 22-shot explosion on Tuesday afternoon (Sept. 21), but it was enough to get by visiting Case Western Reserve University, thanks to a defensive effort that saw the Scots hold the Spartans without a single shot.

With the victory, Wooster improves to 7-0-1 heading into its North Coast Athletic Conference opener this Saturday. It is the second time in three seasons the Scots have been unbeaten through eight matches, as they began the 2002 campaign 6-0-2 en route to a 13-2-5 mark.

On Tuesday, Wooster did not score on any of its eight first-half attempts, but then turned up its attack a notch in the second half, peppering the Case goal time and again. Less than 10 minutes into that half, Scot junior Ashley Maciulaitis broke free from a couple of defenders and scored unassisted from the right side. It was her third goal this fall.

Wooster had several more scoring opportunities, but Spartan ‘keeper Lauren Gaeta came up with 12 saves in the second half alone to keep her team in it.

On the other end, Case (3-3-1) did put forth a late charge, earning a series of three corner kicks around the 10-minute mark, but the Scots continued to hold the Spartans without a shot.

Wooster will welcome Wittenberg University (4-0-3) to Carl Dale Memorial Field for the squads’ league lid-lifter on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
