The College of Wooster found some late offense in its season opener, as the Scots scored twice during the final 10:45 to prevail 2-0 over host John Carroll University late Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 1) in non-conference women’s soccer action at University Hts., Ohio.

Sophomore Sarah Schostarez broke the scoreless tie in the 79th minute, when she booted home a rebound shot for her second career goal. Junior Danielle Witchey, who was credited with an assist on the play, took the initial attempt on goal, hitting the crossbar.

Just 3:40 later, senior Bethany Reiner put the match out of reach with an unassisted score, as she beat her defender and then chipped it over the charging goalkeeper. It was Reiner’s seventh career goal.

Wooster, which won its fifth-straight opener, was actually outshot 10-7 in the contest, but made better use of its scoring opportunities. Both teams had three corner kicks.

The Scots’ junior goalies, Becca Scina and Emily Sterling, combined for four saves – two each – in shutting out John Carroll. Wooster had 11 shutouts in 21 matches last season.

Wooster will host a pair of squads that it has never faced before this weekend, as the College of Mount St. Joseph and Millikin University will pay visits to Carl Dale Memorial Field on Saturday (Sept. 4) and Sunday (Sept. 5), respectively.
