The College of Wooster women's soccer team won its second game
to start the 2004 season by squeaking by the College of Mount St.
Joseph 2-1 Saturday afternoon (Sept. 4) in non-conference women's
soccer action at Wooster, Ohio.
Sophomore Kelly Goss scored her first career goal at 39:18 into
the game to put the Scots ahead in the first half. Fellow sophomore
Sarah Schostarez, who was credited with the assist, took the initial
shot on the play but the Lions' goalie could not control the ball
as Goss sent it to the back of the net.
Wooster added to the lead 17 minutes into the second half when
junior Emily Sterling scored her first goal of the season on a pass
from junior Danielle Witchey. It was Witchey's second helper in
as many games.
Despite being out shot 16-6, Mount St. Joseph battled back to cut
the lead to one with just five minutes to go in the game. However,
the Scots held on as junior goalkeeper Rebecca Scina stopped the
Lions' last attempt to score in the waning moments. Scina was rarely
tested on the day, facing only six shots total and making two saves.
Wooster will next be in action on Sunday, Sept. 5, as the Millikin
University Big Blue will pay a visit to Carl Dale Memorial Field
at 1:00 p.m.
