Scots Split Matches as Part of Season-Opening Wooster Classic
The College of Wooster women’s soccer team split a pair of 1-0 decisions to kickoff the 2005 season, falling to Manchester College but then coming back to beat the University of the South, while hosting the Wooster Classic Saturday and Sunday at Carl Dale Memorial Field. The Scots (1-1) got the better of Manchester for most of Saturday’s match, outshooting the Spartans 22-6. However, Wooster could not find the back of the net, as an unassisted score by Manchester’s Missy King in the 24th minute held up in the end. On Sunday, the Scots converted an early corner kick, with Danielle Witchey heading in a ball from Sarah Schostarez in the seventh minute. That turned out to be the lone goal in an evenly played match, which saw Wooster hold a slight shot advantage (8-7) over the Univ. of the South. Goalie Abby Brown was credited with two saves while preserving the win. While the Scots’ games were both 1-0, there was plenty of scoring in the other match-ups, as the Univ. of the South easily knocked off Mt. Union College 4-1 on Saturday, as did Manchester on Sunday, topping the Purple Raiders 5-2. Next up for Wooster is a weekend road trip to Frostburg, Md., where the Scots will play host Frostburg State University (0-1) and Washington & Lee University (0-0). |
