Scots Shutout W&J 3-0; Lustic Tallies 50th Career Point
WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster women’s soccer team’s 2006 home debut was a successful one Tuesday, as the Fighting Scots shutout Washington & Jefferson College 3-0 at Carl Dale Memorial Field. Wooster (2-1) had three high-quality scoring opportunities in the opening 15 minutes and converted one when Winnie Adrien booted in a loose ball inside the goal box following a corner kick. The Scots also had shots glance off the post in the 8th minute and the crossbar in the 15th minute. Despite the Scots controlling the majority of the action, it remained 1-0 at the halftime break and Washington & Jefferson (2-1) nearly tied it early in the second. During the 52nd minute, the Presidents were on a breakaway, but were unable to get a shot off before a Wooster defender cleared it over the goal line. On the ensuing corner kick, Scot goalie Staci Alario made a diving stop – one of her five saves on the day – to preserve the lead. Wooster carried that momentum on to its offensive end, as moments later the Scots scored twice within a 6:26 period. Wooster made it 2-0 in the 57th minute when an Erin Lustic cross was headed in by Kelly Goss after the ball slipped off the fingertips of the Washington & Jefferson ‘keeper. The assist was Lustic’s 50th career point, just the eighth in team history to hit that milestone. The Scots added an insurance goal in the 63rd minute, with Sara Dresser kicking in a rebound on a corner that was not controlled by the Presdients’ goalie. Overall, Wooster outshot Washington & Jefferson 19-7. The Scots continue non-conference action this Saturday with a home match against fellow northeast Ohio foe Case Western Reserve University (1-1) at 1 p.m. |
