WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster women’s soccer team won by a four-goal margin
for the third-straight match on Sunday afternoon, this time easily dispatching
Alma College 5-1 in non-conference play.
Wooster, now off to a 5-0 start for the first time since 2003, controlled
most of the action Sunday, but only led 1-0 after the first half. That
score was provided by Liz Mott, as her header off a cross
from Kerry Melenovsky found the lower left corner of
the net during the 17th minute.
The Fighting Scots, led by Laura Ayer, picked up their
level of play in the second half, steadily wearing down the Alma team.
In the 62nd minute, Ayer started a Wooster breakaway, and while her shot
was saved initially, Letitia Clark was there to easily
put in the rebound. About 19 minutes later, the Fighting Scots made it
3-0 in a nearly identical manner, as the Alma ‘keeper again saved
an Ayer shot but couldn’t control it and Kate Kiley
was in the right spot for the put-back.
Ayer continued her personal assault during the 84th minute. She took the
ball herself this time, dribbling through and around an Alma triple-team
and then beating the goalie for her fifth goal on the young season.
Wooster wasn’t done, adding another score in the 86th minute when
Alison Hornbeck slid a pass through the Alma defense
to Ashley Owen, who completed the scoring opportunity.
Alma avoided the shutout less than a minute later.
The Scots continue their non-league schedule Wednesday when they host
Otterbein College (1-2-1) at 4:30 p.m.
