Behind freshman Liz Mott’s second goal in as many games, The College of Wooster women's soccer team improved to 2-0 on the young 2007 season and handed Mt. Union College a 2-1 setback on Sunday afternoon. Mott added an assist on the other Wooster score for her first three-point game of her career.
The Scots found the back of the net in a much speedier fashion Sunday, breaking the scoreless game with just under five minutes elapsed in the opening stanza. Mott worked her way through the Purple Raider defense and collected her second goal of her young career. For the second consecutive match, the Scots dominated the ball blasting nine shots to just two for Mt. Union in the first stanza of action.
Clinging to a slim 1-0 advantage nearly midway through the second half, Laura Ayer put Wooster ahead by a 2-0 score with an assist from Mott that found its way past Mt. Union goalkeeper Kaitlyn Mallernee. Ayer, who moved up to a forward position this season after three years as a defensive player, tallied her team-leading third goal of the season.
Mt. Union wasn’t finished yet, as Jenn Scrimenti cut the Wooster lead in half with 17:48 left on a penalty kick. From then on, the Wooster defense buckled down and secured its second win of the campaign.
Senior Abby Brown got the starting nod and went the distance for the Scots between the pipes. She collected three saves in her first action of the fall.
The Scots continue their busy non-conference schedule, as they are right back out to the pitch Tuesday when they travel to Marietta and battle another Ohio Athletic Conference school in the Marietta College Pioneers at 5 p.m.
