Scots Appear Ready to Dent Top-Four at NCAC Tourney
Coming off of a rain-shortened 6-0 victory at Allegheny College on Wednesday (April 21), The College of Wooster womens tennis team will enter this weekends North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament with realistic hopes of a top-four showing for the first time since 1999. Wooster, 9-8 overall and 3-3 in NCAC action, overcame a four-match losing streak in early April, and has gone 4-3 during a busy stretch that has seen the Scots play six times over the last nine days, highlighted by league wins over Earlham College (5-4), Hiram College (9-0), and Allegheny. The key to the Scots success this spring has been solid play from a freshman at No. 1 singles and strong depth throughout the lineup. Joanna Tysko has started every match at the top of the order, compiling an 9-7 record, while she is followed by a trio of seniors at spots two through four. Molly Medaris has taken advantage of playing one position down, as she owns a team-high 11 singles victories at No. 2 (11-6). Stacia Kock has won four of her last six matches at third singles, boosting her mark to 5-12, and Sarah Drewes has steady all year at No. 4, accumulating an 8-7 record. The bottom of the singles lineup has also been productive, as the team has combined for a 7-7 mark at No. 5 singles, including five wins there from sophomore Alison Inderfurth, and a sparkling 11-4 record at No. 6, with seven of those wins going to junior Courtney Miller. Headlining the doubles teams are Tysko and Medaris at the top of the lineup, as the mix of youth and experience has worked together for an 8-5 slate, while the second and third groupings have been shuffled quite a bit. NCAC Tournament play begins Friday morning at Oberlin College with matches taking place throughout the weekend. |
