Wooster Women's Tennis Opens Season With A Loss
In its first outing of the season, the College of Wooster's women's
tennis team fell to Longwood 8-1 in Hilton Head, S.C.
Picking up the Scots' lone victory was junior Lindsay Techel, who
won at the number-four singles spot. She downed Longwood's Laura Veazey
6-4, 6-2.
Junior Sara Stonewater's debut in the number-one singles position
for Wooster was a successful one as she took her opponent - Bonnie
Maholchic - to the brink before losing 6-2, 5-7, 6-7 (5-7).
Other singles matches included Wooster junior Ashley Fisher losing
6-2, 6-1 at the number-two spot to Whitney Shaw, freshman Sara Olson
dropping a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Longwood's Michelle Tober at number-three,
and Scot sophomore Kristin Walley losing 6-1, 6-2 at the fifth spot to Jen
Morton. Also, Wooster senior Ryan Clark put up a good fight at the sixth
singles position before falling 7-5, 7-5 to Carrie Armstrong.
Longwood swept the Scots in doubles action, as Shaw and Tober beat
Stonewater and Fisher at the top spot 8-4, Maholchic and Veazey downed
Olson and Walley 8-1, and Morton and Ramsey completed the sweep at
number-three with an 8-4 decision over Clark and Techel.
"We played very well, considering it was our first match of the
year," commented Wooster's rookie head coach Lauren Cline. "Each player
showed a lot of heart and determination throughout their respective
matches."
