Injuries Hurt Women's Tennis Team in 6-3 Loss to Nazareth
The College of Wooster women's tennis team not only lost to Nazareth 6-3 Friday in Hilton Head, S.C., dropping the Scots record to 1-2 on the season, but Wooster also lost two players to injuries.
Junior Ashley Fisher, the Scots' No. 2 singles player, was forced to retire because of an injury while leading her opponent 5-4 in the first set of their singles match. Junior Lindsey Techel, teamed with sophomore Kristin Walley at No. 3 doubles, also had to retire. Wooster was leading that match as well.
"We had two injuries that caused us to move our line-up around," said Wooster coach Lauren Cline. "We were winning in both of those matchups, and I think the outcome of the match would have been different if everyone played."
The Scots picked up one of their three wins at No. 3 singles, where freshman Sara Olson easily disposed of her opponent 6-4, 6-2. Also recording a win in singles was Walley, who dropped the first set before winning 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. Picking up Wooster's final win was freshman Amanda Bain, who won the first set 7-6 (7-2) before the match was ended and she was declared the winner.
In other singles action, junior Sara Stonewater fell 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1, while senior Ryan Clark also lost 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5.
In doubles, Stonewater and Fisher played well, but fell 9-7 at No. 1. At No. 3, Olson and freshman Neela Satymurthy lost 8-6.
