Wooster Women's Tennis Falls to 1-3
The College of Wooster women's tennis team was nearly swept today,
falling 8-1 to St. Mary's-Notre Dame in Hilton Head, S.C. The Scots needed
to make some major adjustments in the lineup after losing two starters due
to injury the previous day.
"Even though we did not win, I was very proud of the team because
they stepped it up and played very well despite the new starting order,"
said Wooster head coach Lauren Cline. "Also, I though the matches were a
lot closer than the scores indicate."
St. Mary's-Notre Dame swept the singles matches with straight-set
victories across the board. Katies Vales led off at number-one and downed
junior Sara Stonewater 6-4, 6-2, while Natalie Cook beat sophomore Kristin
Walley at the second position 6-4, 6-1.
The Scots' depleted lineup really shown through in the middle of
the order, as freshman Sara Olson fell to Becky Kremer 6-0, 6-2 at
number-three, and senior Ryan Clark lost 6-1, 6-1 to Annie Knish at fourth
singles.
The bottom of the singles order played well for Wooster, as
freshman Amanda Bain fought hard at number-five before falling to Linday
Mollan by the score of 7-5, 6-3. Sixth singles saw freshman Neela
Satyamurthy drop a 6-4, 6-2 decision to St.Mary's-Notre Dame's Trisha Jones.
The Scots played very well in doubles, especially at number-one
where they picked up their lone point with Stonewater and Walley teaming to
beat Jones and Mollan 8-5. Second doubles went to a tiebreaker before Bain
and Clark succumbed to their opponents 9-8 (7-5), while Olson and
Satymurthy lost 8-5 at the number-three spot.
