Women's Tennis Cruises Past Agnes Scott
The College of Wooster women's tennis team upped its mark to 3-1 on
the young season by defeating Agnes Scott College 6-3 in Hilton Head, S.C.
All three of Wooster's victories this year have been 6-3.
Wooster lost at No. 1 singles, but the Scots displayed their depth
by winning four of the other five singles matches, and then won two of
three doubles tilts to close out the match.
Agnes Scott freshman Patricia Brooks, who won her first six matches
of her collegiate career, continued her early season success, but not
without a fight from Scot senior Sarah Strickler. Brooks held off Strickler
by a margin of 6-4 in the opening set and then went on to take the second
6-3.
Senior Sara Stonewater won a close first set 7-5 and then cruised
to a 6-2 win in the second set over Megan Cornwell at the second flight,
followed by a 6-4, 6-4 decision in favor of junior Kristin Walley against
Melissa Hughes at No. 3 singles. Senior Ashely Fisher improved to 4-0 on
the year with a convincing "double-bagel" (6-0, 6-0) of Destiny Palik at
the fourth position, while freshman Molly Medaris defeated Tiffany Collins
by a score of 6-3, 7-5 at No. 6.
Wooster's only other singles loss came at the fifth spot, where Ayn
Battandorff prevailed 6-2, 6-3 over freshman Stacia Koch.
In doubles action, Strickler and Stonewater topped Cornwell and
Hughes 8-4 at No. 1, followed by an 8-6 win for Walley and Fisher over
Brooks and Palik. Third doubles saw the Scots' Sarah Drewes and Holly
Laufman make their collegiate debuts, but unfortunately, the duo suffered a
tough 9-7 loss to Battandorff and Collins.
Wooster wraps up its spring break trip on Monday, March 19, against
Calvin College.
