Women's Tennis Splits Weekend Matches
The College of Wooster women's tennis team started the weekend with
a .500 record (3-3) and still has a .500 mark (4-4), after splitting a pair
of matches with Baldwin-Wallace College on Friday and Wittenberg University
on Saturday.
Unfortunately for Wooster, it lost the more important of the two,
as North Coast Athletic Conference foe Wittenberg topped the Scots,
dropping their league mark to 0-2 on the season.
But on Friday, Wooster displayed its depth in dispatching
Baldwin-Wallace 6-3. The Scots lost at the top two singles positions and at
No. 1 doubles, but easily won the rest of their matches to secure another
non-conference victory.
Singles points from Wooster were earned by junior Kristin Walley,
who prevailed 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3; senior Ashley Fisher, who posted a 6-3,
6-4 decision at fourth singles; freshman Stacia Kock, who gave up just five
games (6-1, 6-4) at No. 5; and classmate Molly Medaris, who cruised past
her opponent 6-0, 6-3 at the sixth position.
In doubles play, Walley and Fisher teamed up for an 8-2 win at No.
2, while Kock and Medaris shutout their opponents at the third flight.
On Saturday, three singles matches went three sets and all of the
doubles matches were fairly close, but the rival Tigers prevailed in all
but one of those and handed the Scots an 8-1 setback.
Kock and Medaris were Wooster's lone winners, claiming an 8-5
decision at third doubles, while senior Sara Stonewater, Walley, and
Medaris all lost three-set singles matches. Stonewater fell 6-1, 2-6, 6-4
at No. 2, Walley won the first set 6-2, but lost the next 6-2, 6-0 at No.
3, and Medaris suffered a tough setback in the closest match of the day
(7-5, 0-6, 6-4).
This week, the Scots will host traditional power Denison University
on Tuesday (April 3) at 3:30 p.m., and then travel to Holland, Mich., for
the annual Great Lakes Colleges' Association Tournament on the weekend.
