Women's Netters Improve to 2-1
After dropping two out of its three doubles matches by narrow
margins on Wednesday morning, the College of Wooster women's tennis team
staged a comeback, winning five of six singles to defeat California
University of Pennsylvania 6-3 in Hilton Head, S.C.
Things got off to a tough start for Wooster, as its top doubles
team of seniors Sara Stonewater and Sarah Strickler and the No. 2 duo of
senior Ashley Fisher and junior Kristin Walley both lost 8-6. However, the
Scots remained within striking distance of upending their NCAA Division II
counterparts after the doubles competition, thanks to an 8-0 shutout by
freshmen Stacia Koch and Molly Medaris at No. 3.
Despite losing her doubles match, Strickler put together a great
match against a good opponent, according to head coach Lauren Cline, and
cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Olga Gonzalez at No. 1 singles. After
winning the first set 6-1, Stonewater lost the next two 6-1, 6-0 to Linda
Escobedo at the second flight to give California (Pa.) its third point of
the day.
But, Wooster would rebound to sweep the remaining singles matches.
Walley won 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3, Fisher and her opponent - Dara Rinchuse -
split the first two sets 0-6, 7-5 before Rinchuse defaulted fourth singles,
while Koch and Medaris posted 6-0, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-0 decisions at No. 5 and
No. 6 singles, respectively.
"Stacia and Molly played very well in both singles and doubles,"
commented Cline. "It was great to see two first-years step up and play
strong for us."
The Scots' continue their spring break matches on Thursday with a
meeting against the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse.
