Women's Tennis Nearly Upends Calvin
The College of Wooster women's tennis team wrapped up its spring
break trip with a 3-2 overall record after a near upset of Calvin College
on Monday morning.
Calvin, which easily defeated Wooster 7-2 last March, split the six
singles matches with the Scots, but won two of three double tilts to earn
the victory.
The Knights' Kati Disselkoen won a close first set in a tiebreaker
against senior Sarah Strickler and then went on take first singles by
claiming the second 6-2, while classmate Sara Stonewater gave Wooster a
split of the top two flights with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Sally Skodinski.
Third and fourth singles went to Calvin with Jessica Bosma
defeating junior Kristin Walley 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 and Anne Koldenhoven
handing senior Ashley Fisher her first loss of the year at No. 4 (6-0, 6-2).
The Scots once again exhibited their depth, though, as freshman
Stacia Koch won the closest match of the day 7-5, 7-6 versus Allison
VerMeer at fifth singles and classmate Molly Medaris improved to 4-1 on the
season by posting a 6-0, 6-3 decision over Trisha Plaiser at No. 6.
In double action, Stonewater and Strickler combined for a
hard-fought 8-5 victory at the top of the lineup against Disselkoen and
Skodinski, but the Knights took the other two matches by scores of 8-6.
Walley and Fisher fell to Bosma and VerMeer at No. 2, followed by freshman
Sarah Drewes and junior Holly Laufman losing to Koldenhoven and Melissa
DeWall.
Wooster, which leaves Hilton Head, S.C., with its best record since
the 1998 season, does not play again until Tuesday, March 27, when it opens
up North Coast Athletic Conference play with a match at Ohio Wesleyan
University.
