Women's Tennis Loses First at Hilton Head
The College of Wooster women's tennis team lost its first match in
a week-long series of six scheduled contests at Hilton Head, S.C., on
Monday, falling to a strong University of Charleston squad 8-1.
Wooster, which now owns a 1-1 mark for the season, fell behind 3-0
early on, losing all three doubles matches. The Scots' Ashley Fisher, a
senior, and Kristin Walley, a junior, came the closest to winning their
respective doubles match, dropping an 8-6 decision to Tara Tragesser and
Kelly Carey at No. 2.
Fisher was the lone Wooster player to earn a point, as she had a
6-3, 6-3 win against Sarah Scheiber at No. 4 singles, but the Scots other
losses certainly weren't due to a lack of effort. Tragesser needed three
hotly-contested sets to outlast senior Sarah Strickler 7-6, 4-6, 7-5 at the
top flight, while Charleston's Michelle Meadows upended freshman Molly
Medaris 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 6.
Rounding out the singles results were a 6-1, 6-3 decision for Maria
Smith over senior Sara Stonewater at the second position, a 6-2, 6-0 sweep
for Carey against Walley in the third spot, and a 6-4, 6-2 victory by Gabby
Daignault against freshman Stacia Koch at No. 5.
Despite the loss, Wooster's second-year head coach Lauren Cline was
pleased with the effort.
"It was a good match overall even though the score was 1-8," she
said. "Ashley had a great match at No. 4 singles. She played very smart.
Sarah Strickler had a tough match at No. 1. She was aggressive and moved
the ball around very well."
Next up for the Scots is a meeting with California University of
Pennsylvania on Wednesday (March 14).
