Women's Tennis Loses to Denison 6-3
The College of Wooster women's tennis team changed up its lineup a
bit and nearly upset traditional power Denison University before succumbing
6-3 to its visitors on Tuesday (April 3) and dropping to 4-5 overall and
0-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
While using a different singles lineup for the first time all
season, Wooster won two singles matches and lost a pair of three setters
that ended up being the difference in the match.
Senior Ashley Fisher, who had compiled a record of 6-2 at fourth
singles, was bumped up to No. 2 in the lineup and defeated Denison's Molly
Smith 7-6, 7-6. The Scots' Sara Stonewater, another senior who normally
plays at second singles, suffered a close loss at No. 4 to Sara Mandzak
6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
Wooster's other tough singles loss came at the top flight, where
Valeria Muradov upended senior Sarah Strickler 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, while the
Scots' other singles point came at the bottom of the lineup, where freshman
Molly Medaris was ahead 6-3 before Heather Frick defaulted the match away.
Rounding out the singles results were a 6-1, 6-1 win for Lisa
Carlton over junior Kristin Walley at No. 3 and a 7-5, 6-3 decision for
Kristen Neff over freshman Stacia Kock at No. 5.
In doubles action, Strickler and Stonewater earned another point
for the Scots with an 8-2 romp of Smith and Frick at the top position, but
the Big Red took the other two matches. Carlton and Neff combined to edge
Walley and Fisher 8-6 at No. 2, and Muradov and Mandzak topped Kock and
freshman Sarah Drewes 8-2 at No. 3.
Up next, Wooster heads to the Great Lakes Colleges Association
Tournament, which will take place on the campus of Hope College in Holland,
Mich., this weekend (April 6-7).
