Women's Tennis Finishes Seventh at GLCA's
The College of Wooster women's tennis team compiled a record of
1-3, while placing seventh overall at the Great Lakes Colleges Association
Tournament this past weekend (April 6-7).
Wooster won its opening round match over Kalamazoo College 6-3 and
followed that up with a narrow 5-4 setback to Albion College on Friday
afternoon.
On Saturday, the Scots were moved indoors during the morning
session due to the weather and there they were shutdown 6-0 by Hope
College. Despite losing 8-1 to DePauw University to conclude the
tournament, Wooster ended up playing some of its best tennis, as it dropped
several close matches to the GLCA's first-place finisher.
On the weekend, freshman Molly Medaris led Wooster with the most
wins, going 3-0 at No. 6 singles, while at the top of the lineup senior
Sarah Strickler picked up a couple of victories. Strickler topped her
Kalamazoo opponent 6-4, 6-2 and her Albion opponent 6-4, 7-5, both at first
singles, while Medaris prevailed 6-2, 6-3 against Kalamazoo, 6-2, 6-3
against Albion, and 4-6, 7-6, (7-3) against DePauw.
Other singles' winners for the Scots were senior Sara Stonewater
and junior Kristin Walley. Stonewater compiled a record of 1-3 at No. 2
singles with the win being a 6-0, 6-0 decision in the Kalamazoo match,
while Walley lost a three-setter to Kalamazoo (7-6, 4-6, 6-0) at third
singles and then defeated her Albion opponent 6-3, 6-2 and barely lost 6-4,
7-5 to her DePauw opponent at No. 4.
In doubles action, Stonewater and Strickler went 2-2 at the top
flight with convincing victories coming against Kalamazoo (8-0) and Albion
(8-1). Wooster's lone other victory came via freshman Stacia Kock and
Medaris during the Kalamzoo match at No. 3 doubles (8-3).
The Scots, who are now 5-8 overall on the season, return to
conference play next, when they travel to Oberlin College on Wednesday
(April 11), for a match starting at 4:30 p.m.
