OWU's Doubles Keys Victory Over Wooster
A sweep of the doubles matches by Ohio Wesleyan University led to a
6-3 setback for The College of Wooster on Tuesday in North Coast Athletic
Conference women's tennis action.
Ohio Wesleyan (5-2, 2-0 NCAC), which easily defeated Wooster 8-1 on
two occasions last season, needed to win three tightly-contested doubles
matches to squeeze past the Scots this time around.
The Battling Bishops' Anna-Britt Mahler and Becca Winder topped
seniors Sarah Strickler and Sara Stonewater 8-6 in the top flight. Katie
Kneas and Katie Yates won 8-4 over junior Kristin Walley and senior Ashley
Fisher at the No. 2 spot, while Kelsey Dix and Gretchen Heinze narrowly
beat freshmen Molly Medaris and Sarah Drewes 9-7 in third doubles.
In singles play, Mahler won a straight-set decision over Strickler
at No. 1 (6-0, 6-4), but Stonewater gave Wooster a point at second singles
after defeating Dix 6-0, 6-2. Kneas beat Walley 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3 and
Fisher improved to 5-1 on the season with a 7-6, 6-2 victory at the fourth
flight. Scot Stacia Kock, a freshman, had a win in the closest match of the
day, upending Winder 7-6, 6-4 at No. 5, while rounding out the singles'
results was Heinze topping Medaris 7-5, 6-3 at No. 6.
Wooster, which dropped to .500 on the season (3-3) and 0-1 in the
NCAC, opens a three-match homestand on Friday, when it hosts
Baldwin-Wallace College (3-4, 1-0 Ohio Athletic Conference) at 3:30 p.m.
