Scot Tennis Teams Drop Opening Matches

The College of Wooster tennis teams opened their 2002 campaigns on Saturday (Feb. 23) with setbacks to a Walsh University squad that was already playing its fourth match of the season.

Wooster's lack of match experience showed at times at the indoor courts in Canton, Ohio, as the men were unable to take advantage of several opportunities and eventually fell 5-2 and the women lost 6-3.

The men's match began with Walsh earning the doubles point 2-1. The Scots' lone win came at No. 3, where junior Clint Bailey and freshman Matt Sykes combined for an 8-4 decision.

Singles victories for Wooster came from senior Jake Sintich at the second position and freshmanÚ Nikhil Gonsalves at No. 5. Sintich split the first two sets 3-6, 6-4 and was leading 1-0 in the third when his opponent retired, while Gonsalves prevailed in straights 6-3, 6-3. Playing an excellent match before losing was the Scots' top player - sophomore Nilesh Saldanha - who went three with his opponent (6-4, 3-6, 7-5).

In women's action, the Cavaliers swept Wooster in the doubles before splitting the six singles matches. Winners for the Scots were sophomore Stacia Kock at No. 2 (6-1, 6-3), freshman Angie Beeler at No. 3 (6-3, 6-1), and sophomore Sarah Drewes at No. 4 (4-6, 7-6, 6-2).

Wooster does not play again until its spring break trip to Hilton Head, S.C., in a couple of weeks.
