Singles Play Keys Wooster Win Over Malone
The College of Wooster women’s tennis team won five of six singles matches to pick up its first victory of 2006, getting past Malone College 5-3 in non-conference action Wednesday at Wooster. Singles was played first in order to help get a decision in the match before darkness set in, and the Scots quickly assured themselves of a win. At the top of the order, Joanna Tysko scored a decisive 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles, followed by Allison Dupuis putting up matching 6-3 sets to dispose of her opponent at No. 2. Wooster lost at third singles, but swept the bottom half of the lineup, including straight-set wins by Alison Inderfurth and Emily Alward at No. 4 (6-0, 6-4) and No. 5 (6-3, 6-3). After splitting the first two sets 6-4, Melissa Levenger triumphed 10-3 in the third-set super tiebreaker at No. 6. Third doubles did not finish, thus making it an eight-point match (instead of the usual nine). The Scots will play their second home match in as many days on Thursday against Ohio Northern University (11-2) at 3:30 p.m. |
