Scots Fall to Ashland 7-2 In Season Opener
The College of Women’s tennis team fell to NCAA Div. II neighbor Ashland University 7-2 Thursday evening at the Wooster Racquet Club in the team’s season opener, despite the team’s good all-around effort. With the win, Ashland moves to 6-9 on the young season, while the Fighting Scots fall to 0-1. Highlighting the Scots’ evening was senior three-time all-NCAC honoree Joanna Tysko who picked up her first victory of the season via a 6-4, 6-4 victory in No. 1 singles action. Also chalking up a win was senior Sarah Suddendorf, the lone returning letterwinner other than Tysko on this year’s squad, who scored a hard-fought 7-5, 6-3 decision at No. 6. In addition, freshmen Elissa Lauber (3-6, 3-6) at No. 2 and Erin Bauer (2-6, 4-6) at No. 5 were sold in their collegiate debuts, with each falling in competitive matches to their counterparts. The Scots were outmatched in the doubles competition, with the Eagles sweeping all three matches by decisive margins. Wooster will be off until it travels to Hilton Head, S.C. for its spring break trip. The Scots will clash with regional foe Heidelberg College on March 16 at 8 a.m. in the first of five contests in the south. |
