The College of Women’s tennis team fell to NCAA Div. II neighbor Ashland University 9-0 Thursday evening at the Wooster Racquet Club in the team’s season opener. With the win, Ashland moves to 19-4 on the season, while the Fighting Scots fall to 0-1.

The Scots came out looking for their initial victory of the season, but the No. 1 doubles tandem of Elissa Lauber and Brenna Hart dropped a tough 8-2 decision to the Eagle duo of Myra Pepino and Corinne Pasley. The Wooster No. 2 doubles pair of Erin Bauer and Suzanne Hamby faired a touch better, but wound up falling to Chelsey Guerin and Christa Halicki by an 8-3 score, as the Eagles took the third doubles match and possessed a 3-0 lead headed into singles’ play.

In singles action, Lauber produced the best result at No. 1, pushing Katherine Goudy before falling by a 7-5, 6-1 score, as Ashland breezed through the final five matches with victories to seal the Scots’ fate.

Wooster will be off until it travels to Hilton Head, S.C. for its spring break trip. The Scots will clash with the Shepherd University Rams on March 16 at 12 p.m. in the first of four contests during their annual trip.
