Case Western Reserve Edges Wooster 6-3
The College of Wooster and Case Western Reserve University were evenly matched throughout Monday’s non-conference women’s tennis affair, but the visiting Spartans did just enough to get past the Fighting Scots by a final score of 6-3 at Wooster’s D.J. Hard Memorial Courts. All three doubles matches went down to the wire. Case (2-7) prevailed 9-8 at No. 1, needing a 7-3 tiebreaker to decide the team point. Second and third doubles were both played to 8-6 decisions, with Erin Bauer and Eden Kovacik picking up the first point for the Scots at No. 2. The four Spartans who won in doubles carried that momentum over into singles, as they all won in straight sets. Bauer was a double winner, too. She split the first two sets 1-6 and 6-3 with her opponent at the third position, and then with the match already decided, they played a super tiebreaker in place of the third set, with Bauer easily prevailing 10-2. Also for Wooster (0-8), freshman Suzanne Hamby picked up her first collegiate victory in convincing fashion, as she did not give up a game at No. 4 (6-0, 6-0). The Scots travel to North Coast Athletic Conference foe Allegheny College (10-5, 2-0 NCAC) on Wednesday. |
