Scots Hosting Oberlin Wednesday, Then at All-Ohio's Saturday

After having its scheduled meet last weekend, the Case Invitational, cancelled due to the unseasonably cold and snowy weather in Cleveland, Ohio, The College of Wooster men’s and women’s track & field teams have two meets on tap this week. The first one is a recent addition, as Oberlin College will visit the Fighting Scots on Wednesday, April 11, for a non-scoring dual. Action begins at 5 p.m. with the javelin, and the running events are slated to start at 5:30 p.m. This Saturday, April 14, a number of Wooster athletes will be competing among the best in the Buckeye State, as the annual All-Ohio Div. III Championships will take place in Delaware, Ohio, on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University at 10 a.m.

    Last Meet: On March 31, Wooster hosted its lone track meet of the season, the annual Wooster Invitational, which welcomed a total of 12 schools. The Scots performed well, as the women earned a second-place finish with 104.5 points, behind only Case Western Reserve University (118.5), and the men were fifth, scoring 86 points. Ashland University won the men’s meet (107).
    Leading Wooster was Ali Drushal (Lakeville, Ohio / West Holmes), who won both the pole vault and javelin throw, while placing second in the 400-meter hurdles and fourth in the 100 hurdles. Drushal cleared 2.90 meters to best the rest of the field in the pole vault and her throw of 121 feet in the javelin was 11 inches longer than the runner-up. In the hurdles, she turned in a time of 1:08.76 in the 400 and 16.93 in the 100.
    Also taking an individual title was Kayla Miller (Mercer, Pa. / Mercer Area), who won the triple jump competition with an effort of 34 feet, 7.75 inches. She also was third in the high jump (4 feet, 10 inches) and fifth in the long jump (15 feet, 0.75 inches).
    Several other Scot women placed in the top-five, led by Kelly Aughenbaugh (Wooster, Ohio / Wooster) taking third in the triple jump (31 feet, 7 inches) and fourth in the long jump (15 feet, 4 inches). Katie Dale (West Point, Ind. / McCutcheon) placed fourth in the shot put (10.68 meters), while Sara Wiswell (Broadview Hts., Ohio / Brecksville-Broadview Heights) and Ashley Baker (Lexington, Ohio / Lexington) each recorded fifth-place showings, Wiswell in the pole vault (2.60 meters) and Baker in the javelin (89 feet, 5 inches).
    Noteworthy, Katie Wieferich (Marietta, Ohio / Marietta), a two-time All-American last year, competed in her initial track meet of 2007 after sitting out the indoor season and was third in the 1500 meters (4:54.17).
    The Wooster men also crowned an individual champion, as jumping specialist Tristan Jordan (Virginia Beach, Va. / Floyd E. Kellam) won the triple jump (40 feet, 3 inches).
    In addition, Rick Drushal’s (Lakeville, Ohio / West Holmes) throw of 45 feet, 3 inches in the shot put was good for a second-place finish, and he took fifth in the discus (128 feet, 9 inches). Robert McConnell (Blairsville, Pa. / Kiski School) placed third in the pole vault, clearing 3.35 meters.   
    On the track, the Scots had three athletes earn top-five finishes, as Tim Presto (Wadsworth, Ohio / Wadsworth) was fourth in the 1500 meters (4:12.52) and Ashton Segree (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Central Catholic) and Robert Kelm (Cincinnati, Ohio / Colerain) finished fifth in the 100 meters (11.66) and 400-meter hurdles (59.49), respectively.

    NCAC Athlete of the Week: For her efforts last meet (see above), Wooster’s Ali Drushal (Lakeville, Ohio / West Holmes) was named the North Coast Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week for women’s field events.
