Katie Wieferich (Marietta, Ohio / Marietta), who recently graduated magna cum laude from The College of Wooster, was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team for women’s cross country/track & field, announced the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Thursday.

As a first-team honoree, Wieferich is now eligible for the 2007 Academic All-America Team®, which will be announced June 27. She was a second-team Academic All-American a year ago.

Wieferich wrapped up a standout distance running career with the Fighting Scots at the end of May when she earned her fourth and fifth All-American honors, placing third in the 10,000 meters (35:08.16) and fourth in the 5000 meters (16:59.44) at the NCAA Div. III Championships. Also during the 2006-07 academic year, Wieferich was an All-American in cross country, finishing 14th overall (23:24) at that national meet.

Additionally, Wieferich was the North Coast Athletic Conference Runner of the Year this past season in both outdoor track and cross country. On the track, she won the 5000 in a conference-record 16:44.68 as well as the 10,000 (39:05.45) at the NCAC Championships, and in October, cruised across the 6K cross country course at the league meet in a winning time of 24:11. Prior to her All-American runs, she became the second Wooster harrier to capture the individual crown at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional (22:07).

Outside of athletics, Wieferich is equally accomplished. She made the Dean’s List for the fifth and sixth times this year, received the school’s Sisodia-Williams Prize in biochemistry, and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa national honor society. A chemistry major, she also served as a tutor in that department.

This Academic All-District Team was voted on by members of CoSIDA, following a review of top student-athletes (min. 3.20 cumulative GPA) from the college division (NCAA Div. II and III, and NAIA) in Wooster’s five-state district (Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Tennessee).
