Scots Continue Indoor Season at Oberlin Open Friday Night
The College of Wooster men’s and women’s track & field teams continue the young 2008 season this week, as the Fighting Scots will be at the Oberlin Open Friday night, Feb. 8. It is expected to be a five-team, non-scoring meet, with individuals from Ashland University, Hiram College, Lake Erie College, host Oberlin College, and Wooster competing for individual honors. Action is slated to start at 6 p.m. Last Week: On Feb. 2, both Scot teams finished among the top half of their respective fields at the annual North Coast Athletic Conference Relays, as the women placed third of nine teams and the men tied for fourth in their 10-team field. The meet was hosted by Denison University in Granville, Ohio. The Wooster women, which scored 64.5 points, were led by double-event winner Kayla Miller (Mercer, Pa. / Mercer Area). The junior jump specialist cleared the high jump bar at 5 feet, 1 inch, just one inch shy of the school record, and hit a mark of 33 feet, 10 inches in the triple jump. In addition to those two victories, she ran the opening leg of the 4x400-meter relay team, followed by Emily Wilmers (Cincinnati, Ohio / Clark Montessori), Elizabeth Wardrop (Rockford, Mich. / American School of The Hague), and Ali Drushal (Lakeville, Ohio / West Holmes), and the group finished in third-place (4:33.06). Junior thrower Katie Dale (West Point, Ind. / McCutcheon) also was a top individual performer, taking runner-up in the shot put (36 feet, 10.5 inches), while Ashley Baker (Lexington, Ohio / Lexington), KateLynn Riley (Westlake, Ohio / Westlake), Wilmers, and Suzanne Capehart (Oakton, Va. / Oak Hill) teamed up for second-place in the 1600-meter sprint medley relay (4:38.97). Third-place relays for the Scots came courtesy of Dana Culbert (Fremont, Ohio / St. Joseph Central Catholic), Claire Miller (Portland, Ore. / St. Mary’s Academy), Jessica Yarmosky (Pittsfield, Mass. / Monument Mountain), and Anna Gil (San Francisco, Calif. / Lick-Wilmerding), in the 4x800-meter event (10:49.95), and Yarmosky, Culbert, Claire Miller, and Capehart in the distance medley relay (13:34.03). On the men’s side, Wooster came up with 46 points, with the likes of Jon Mathis (Tallmadge, Ohio / Tallmadge), Bryan Albani (Warren, Ohio / Howland), and Steve Zumbrun (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Central Catholic) leading the way. Mathis was the team’s lone individual winner, clearing 6 feet, 0.75 inches in the high jump, while picking up second-place finishes were Albani in the 55 hurdles (7.97) and Zumbrun in the shot put (44 feet, 8 inches). |
