Scots Competing at Kenyon Invitational Saturday
Following a combined 13 top-10 individual performances at the All-Ohio Championships, The College of Wooster track & field teams continue their season this Saturday, April 19, with the Kenyon Invitational, hosted by Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. The field events will begin at 10 a.m., while action on the track is scheduled to start at noon. At the 2007 Kenyon Invitational, Wooster’s men’s team finished in second-place of 10 and the women were sixth of nine. Last Week: On April 12, Eric Dyer (Lexington, Mass. / Lexington) won the triple jump and Katie Dale (West Point, Ind. / McCutcheon) set a school record at the All-Ohio Championships, highlighting the Fighting Scots’ results during the annual meet, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University. Dyer’s victory was a dramatic one, earning the title on his last jump when he hit a mark of 45 feet, 2.5 inches to outdistance runner-up David Burke of Ohio Wesleyan by 3.5 inches (44 feet, 11 inches). It was a personal-best for the sophomore who continues his breakout season. Also for Wooster in the triple jump, senior Tristan Jordan (Virginia Beach, Va. / Floyd E. Kellam) came in fourth (43 feet, 11.25 inches). The Scots had multiple scorers in the 10,000 meters as well, paced by junior Mark DeWine’s (Cedarville, Ohio / Bishop O’Connell – Va.) fourth-place run. A time of 32:58.19 put him less than seven seconds behind the runner-up, while sophomore Terry Workman (Hillsboro, Ohio / Edward Lee McClain) added an eighth-place showing in the long distance race, crossing the finish line in 33:09.54. Jordan finished just outside of the scoring in the long jump via a ninth-place mark of 20 feet, 2.25 inches, as did junior Averell Gatton (McLean, Va. / Langley) and sophomore Jon Mathis (Tallmadge, Ohio / Tallmadge), who tied for ninth overall in the high jump (5 feet, 10 inches), and sophomore Ramses Clements (Chicago, Ill. / De la Salle), who was ninth in the triple jump (40 feet, 9 inches). Dale re-set her own record in the hammer throw with a heave of 108 feet, 9 inches, while fellow junior Kayla Miller (Mercer, Pa. / Mercer Area) led Wooster’s women’s team via a third-place finish in the triple jump, reaching 35 feet, 3.25 inches. Sophomore KateLynn Riley (Westlake, Ohio / Westlake) had the third-fastest time of the preliminaries in the 100-meter hurdles at 16.01 and lowered that to 15.89 during the finals, but slipped to sixth-place. Also on the track, freshman Suzanne Capehart (Oak Hill, Va. / Oakton) covered the 5000 meters in 18:38.82, good for fourth. Additional noteworthy performances included Miller tying for ninth in the high jump (4 feet, 9 inches) and Dale posting a 10th-place effort in the shot put (35 feet, 5.75 inches). NCAC Athletes of the Week: For their efforts (see above), freshman Suzanne Capehart (Oak Hill, Va. / Oakton) and junior Kayla Miller (Mercer, Pa. / Mercer Area) were selected as the North Coast Athletic Conference Athletes of the Week for women’s distance/middle distance and women’s field events, respectively. |
