While The College of Wooster track and field teams finished 13th (men) and in a tie for 18th-place (women) out of a field of 21 NCAA Div. III schools at the All-Ohio Championships this weekend (April 16-17), the Scots did have a handful of individual standouts, led by Keith Vance and Jill Berner.

Vance, a senior, threw the shot put 51 feet, 2.5 inches to set a school outdoor record, while finishing as the runner-up at the state-wide meet, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University. The mark provisionally qualifies him for the NCAA Championships, currently standing as the 12-best throw across Div. III this spring. Vance also set the school indoor record in the shot put this winter (51 feet, 0.75 inches).

Other Scots joining Vance in the scoring column at the All-Ohio’s were Nii Djan Tackie, who took fifth in the triple jump (42 feet, 6.5 inches) and Chris Taft and Matt Linman, who were sixth in the 800 (1:57.63) and 10,000 meters (33:26.48), respectively.

On the women’s side, Berner won a pole vault competition for the third time this spring, but what made this one all the more impressive, was she set a meet record with a height of 10 feet, 10 inches. In fact, Berner’s mark was 10 inches higher than any other competitor.

Wooster did not have any other women’s scorers, however, other notable performances included Julie Draper taking 12th in the 1500 meters (5:07.85), Heather Reed running 1:11.98 in the 400 hurdles, and Katie Wieferich finishing the 5000 meters with a time of 20:11.25, good for 15th overall.

Team champions were the Mt. Union College men (109 points) and Denison University women (99).
