The College of Wooster indoor track and field teams competed late
into the night Friday (Feb. 6) at the annual Case Invitational
in Cleveland, Ohio, with the men finishing in third out of seven
teams and the women taking sixth in a nine-team field.
Case Western Reserve University defended its home track, winning
the men's competition with 113.5 total points, edging nearby rival
Baldwin-Wallace College (109), while Wooster was not far behind
either with 83.5 points. In the women's division, Baldwin-Wallace
took the gold (128) and the Scots totaled 36.5 points.
The Wooster men had a nice mix of points on the track and in the
field events to propel them into third. Sophomore Chris Taft led
all runners in the 800 meters with a time of 2:00.49, while first-year
teammate Tim Presto took fourth overall in the events (2:01). Another
freshman, Rob Kelm, was runner-up in the 55-meter hurdles (8.40),
while junior Tony Sutton sprinted to a third-place effort in the
55-meter dash (6.67).
In the field, the Scots picked up a pair of wins, as Nii Djan
Tackie and James Williams swept the jumping events with respective
leaps of 40 feet, 5.50 inches in the triple and 20 feet, 10.50
inches in the long jump. Also noteworthy, Keith Vance came in second
in the shot put (48 feet, 4.50 inches), followed closely by teammate
Rick Drushal in fourth-place (46 feet, 4.25 inches).
For the Wooster women, field events proved to be the strong point
of Friday's meet. Freshman Dana Doran-Myers placed third in the
high jump, clearing five feet, two inches, to equal her own school
record, while sophomore Kate Legg also finished third in the pole
vault (eight feet).
On the track, two fifth-place finishers led the Scots — sophomore
Laura Barnhart in the 400 meters (1:04.73) and freshman Katie Wieferich
in the 1500 meters (5:14.68). |
