| Both The College of Wooster men's and women's track
and field teams fared well at the non-scoring Wooster Classic on
Friday (April 30), as they made final preparations for next weeks
conference meet by combining for eight individual first-place finishes.
With nine women placing in the top-three,
including three winners, Wooster showed great potential for the
North Coast Athletic Conference Championships. Laura Barnhart took
the 400-meter competition for the second week in a row, this time
running a 1:02.95. Also crossing the finish line first were Heather
Reed in the 400 hurdles (1:10.18) and Katie Wieferich in
the weather-shortened steeplechase (2000 meters, instead of the
usual 3000) with a time of 7:48.05.
Wieferich was followed by teammates Julie Draper in
7:48.33 and Vanessa Georgeson in 8:30.56 for a 1-2-3 sweep
in the steeplechase. Becca Scina was runner-up for the Scots
in the javelin (25.18 meters), while Kathy McCreary, Emily
Moore, Reed, and Ashley Zervos placed third in the 800
meters (2:27.79), 1500 meters (5:10.93), 100 hurdles (16.42), and
5000 meters (20:47.23), respectively.
Woosters mens team combined for three wins, highlighted
by a sweep in the throwing events, as Keith Vance was victorious
in the shot put (14.98 meters), Rick Drushal won the discus
(40.29 meters), and Marc Bryson triumphed in the javelin
(40.74 meters). The Scots other first-place showings came
on the track, where Chris Taft and Charlie Van Gombos paced
the field in the 800 (1:56.81) and 5000 meters (16:13.52), respectively.
Vance and Drushal switched places in the two throwing events
that they didn't win, putting Vance second in the discus (39.16
meters) and Drushal second in the shot put (14.14 meters). Back
on the track, Nii Djan Tacke earned two runner-up finishes
in the 100 (11.78) and 200 meters (23.77), while Rob Kelm, Tim
Presto, and Patrick Wynne were second in the 400 hurdles
(1:03.42), 1500 meters (4:08.33), and 5000 meters (16:32.50), respectively.
Also this past weekend, Wooster
was home to the NCAC Championships for decathlon and heptathlon,
which traditionally take place the week before the main portion
of the conference meet. The lone competitor for the Scots was freshman Dana
Doran-Myers, who withdrew after two events (100 hurdles, high
jump) due to an injury, but still managed to place eighth with
765 points. |
