Scots Open Indoor Season at Oberlin Lid-lifter
The College of Wooster track and field teams kicked off the 2006 indoor season at the Oberlin Lid-lifter hosted by Oberlin College on Friday, Jan. 20, at the Heisman Club Fieldhouse. The Fighting Scots were one of five teams at the non-scoring meet, including the hosts, fellow North Coast Athletic Conference member Hiram College, Heidelberg College, and NAIA Div. II Tiffin University. Wooster had one individual win on the day, that coming from senior standout Jill Berner who cleared exactly 10 feet in the pole vault, easily outdistancing the rest of the field by over two feet. Fellow senior Kate Legg and first-year Ali Drushal tied for second in the event with vaults of 7 feet, 6.5 inches. It marked Drushal’s second runner-up showing on the day, as she also finished second in the 55-meter hurdles (9.74). Other notable performances on the women’s side included freshman Kayla Miller with fifth- and second-place showings in the long jump (14 feet, 3.75 inches) and triple jump (32 feet, 7 inches), respectively, first-year Victoria Peterman with a third-place toss in the shot put (32 feet, 5.25 inches), junior Dana Doran-Myers clearing 4 feet, 8 inches in the high jump for third, and sophomore Hanna Bierlein crossing the line fourth overall in the 500 meter race (1:27.98). Junior Rick Drushal and sophomore Tristan Jordan picked up second-place showings in their respective events to lead the Scot men. Drushal tossed the shot put 43 feet, 5.25 inches, while Jordan cleared 19 feet, 6.25 inches in the long jump. In the high jump, sophomore Ross Stevenson and freshman Averell Gatton both cleared heights of 5 feet, 10 inches to tie for third-place overall. Other top finishers included sophomore Seth Stuck with a fifth-place showing in the 200 meters (25.60), first-year Brian Loy crossing the line seventh in the 3,000 meters (9:49.40), and senior Thomas Burnett tossing the shot put 37 feet, 7.5 inches for fourth-place overall. Wooster will get a chance to see how it stacks up with the rest of the conference this weekend as the Scots will compete at the annual NCAC Relays hosted by Denison University in Granville, Ohio, on Saturday, Jan. 28. |
