Katie Wieferich, The College of Wooster’s standout distance runner, was in top form Friday as she won the 10,000 meters at the All-Ohio Championships for NCAA Div. I schools Friday at the University of Cincinnati, highlighting a successful weekend for the Fighting Scot track & field teams that also saw the men take second and the women sixth at the Kenyon Invitational Saturday.

Ironically, Wieferich, an NCAA Div. III All-American in both the 5000 and 10,000 last spring, was only in the Div. I race because she was disqualified early during the 10,000 at the All-Ohio Div. III Championships Wednesday. Instead, she went out with 12 other competitors from bigger schools from across the state and ran a time of 35:41.05, which was more than two minutes faster than her nearest competitor, Ohio University’s Annie Beecham (37:53.21). Wieferich’s time also marked a school record, as she lowered her own mark set at the NCAA Championships last year (35:53.55), and it was the second-fastest in Div. III this season.

The rest of the Wooster track teams were at Kenyon and the men, behind seven top-three individual finishes, scored 121 points, just 44 behind team champion Ohio Wesleyan University, two ahead of Otterbein College, and well in front of the other seven squads.

The Scots’ top performer was Rick Drushal, who won the discus (41.38 meters) and placed third in the shot put (14.10 meters). Tristan Jordan continued his fine season with a runner-up effort in the triple jump (13.39 meters), followed by teammate Ramses Clements in third (12.87 meters), while Averell Gatton contributed a third-place showing in the high jump (6 feet).

On the track, Wooster received a nice boost from Ashton Segree, as he came in second in the 100 meters (11.48), and Bryan Albani led the Scots’ high-scoring hurdles group via a third-place finish in the 110 (15.49).

In the women’s competition, Wooster totaled 50 points for sixth-place among their field of nine teams.

Kayla Miller scored in three events for the Scots, highlighted by an individual victory in the triple jump (11.05 meters).

Wooster continues preparing for the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships on Thursday, when it will be at the Otterbein Invitational.
