A word about group assignments

Group assignments are done in this course to give you a feel for how science is really done. In the real world, nobody operates in a vacuum. We all ask for help. For example, Dr. Morgan and I ask each other for advice and critiques on our work all the time. This is not 'cheating' and no one cares whether I asked for advice or not when I submit a grant. All that they care about is how good that final product is. Learning how to work with others is important in science and almost always benefits rather than hurts you (yes, there are horror stories but they are rare). I hope these experiences will give you a feel for how to work with others, how to get your opinions across, and how to control difficult colleagues. This is something the business world values, granting agencies look for, and fellow doctors appreciate. Your ability to do this will directly affect your grade since an efficient group should perform better than one that is operating inefficiently. In a sense, your collective ability is what I am grading you on. However, I have made some compromises and now include a method for evaluating the efforts of an individual.

Why have group assignments?

I hope these experiences will give you a feel for how to work with others, how to get your opinions across, and how to control difficult colleagues. This is something the business world values, granting agencies look for, and fellow doctors appreciate. Your ability to do this will directly affect your grade since an efficient group should perform better than one that is operating inefficiently. In a sense, your collective ability is what I am grading you on. However, I have made some compromises and now include a method for evaluating the efforts of an individual.

How will this affect my grade?

Approximately 25% of your grade will be derived from group assignments . I will attempt to be as fair as possible but for the most part I am grading the final product. You are responsible for letting me know if there are any problems within your group (such as slackers, or dominators). I will ask for a critique of your colleagues performance as part of the grant assignment and the lab reports to help me evaluate individual effort. This does affect the final grade of individuals so take it seriously and be honest.
