Grading

The course has both a laboratory and a lecture component. The grant is included as a separate section in the grading I describe below.

Approximately half of your final grade will be determined by your performance on two tests and the case studies/focus reading assignments. About a third of your grade is determined by the grant exercise (broken up into several portions). These include the preliminary exercises (assignments 1-4) that you will be required to do before starting the grant. And finally the laboratory projects will compose about one sixth of your final grade. Please note that unexcused absences from lab will result in the loss of ten points from your final total.

As in any class, cheating will not be tolerated. You know what cheating is and I have learned from hard experience to not be lenient. If you have any questions about what constitutes cheating or plagiarism, it is your responsibility to ask. You can also refer to the Scot's Key.

1. Tests Two tests @ 200 points total*

Lab Grade (~17% of Total Grade)

2. Lab notebook - 50 points; The notebook will be collected at the end of the course but in addition you will receive progress points for keeping the aspect up to date

  • draft of methods for RNAi assay
  • protocol development for intron detection experiment(primers, expected results)
  • Results from intron detection and RNAi experiment

3. Participation - minus 10 points for each unexcused absence in lab

Laboratory Reports will be as discussed in the book "A Short Guide to Writing About Biology" by Pechenik (on reserve).

The Grant Writing Exercise (~33% of total grade)
