due when |
|
Week 1
|
Introduction
to the Grant writing project. Introduction to PP2B. You should
ask me questions to make sure you know what PP2B is and what
is expected for the grant |
Assignment
1 - download and annotate full length Paramecium PP2B
sequences from Genbank, Due on Friday
|
|
Week 2
|
This part
of the lab will be part of your preliminary results.
Make sure you understand what introns are, why it is important
to verify their presence (and removal in the mRNA).
|
Assignment
2 - align all paramecium PP2B sequences.
Due on Friday
Assignment
3 - identify introns in Paramecium PP2B sequences.
Due on Friday. |
|
Week 3
|
Look
for what has been done in the classic model systems - mouse,
zebrafish, drosophila, and C. elegans, and
depth, meaning a number of papers have been published working
on
PP2B in
that
system. |
Assignment
4 - Create
table of similar PP2B sequences from other species. |
|
Week 4
|
By this
stage you should know what PP2B does biochemically and
be able to provide some examples of the physiological functions
for PP2B in other systems.
|
Identify
Assignment 6 partners (however, turn in separate assignment
4 and 5; be sure you have written them separately
- do not write together!) |
|
Week 5
|
You
should use the informational literacy help session to round
out and provide depth to your understanding as to what PP2B
does in a variety of other systems. You should also have
identified a review paper that provides a good summary of
PP2B function. |
Assignment
5. Your assignment is to provide a 2-page summary of
what you have learned about the functions of the PP2B family
in different species (yeast, mammals, other). Due on following
Monday by 5:00 PM |
|
Week 6 (schedule
individual meetings)
|
My comments should inform
you as to the quality of yoru references, the quality of
yoru writing and the depth of your analysis. If anything
is unclear - arrange a meeting with me and take notes as
to how to improve your summary. This summary will be the
backbone of the introduction to your grant
|
Return Assignment 5 on Friday
|
|
Week 7
|
A
good peer review look at the total package and lets the
authors know how we they have communicatedthe biochemical
properties of PP2B and provided a comprehensive reveiw
of PP2B function in a wide range of systems.
|
Rough Draft of
Backgorund section of the Grant due on Monday for Peer
review. Schedule as working pairs.
|
|
Week 8
|
Your
background section should be taking shape and you should
be beginning to make progress on your experimental design.
You should have some ideas as to the types of experiments
you will be proposing.
|
Peer
evaluation returned.Meet
to discuss grant Exp Design with Dr. Fraga. Come to the
meeting with some examples of the types of experiments
you might conduct.
|
|
Week 9
|
During
this week you and your partner should be working together
to finalize
your background section and to get a good rough draft of
your experimental design. Make sure you understand the
various possibilities for thsi family (redundant, overlap,
different functions)
|
Turn in your draft for faculty review on Friday
|
|
Week 10
|
You should meet
with Dr. Fraga to discuss his critique. Make sure you know
what you are missing, what you are doing well and if you
are headed in the right directions
|
Faculty review
of grant returned.
M-F: Meet with
Dr. Fraga to discuss grant between now and when next
draft is due. |
|
Week 11
|
Remember the
goal of the experimental design is is to expand upon what
we do in lab and to determine the functions of this gene
family.
|
Rough
Draft 2 for Peer review due on Monday.
Return critique on Friday/discuss grant |
|
Week 12
|
ReBegin to think
about how you will present the results from lab in your
grant and how your experimental design will build upon
those results.
|
Grant draft due on Friday
for Faculty review.
|
|
Week 13
|
Arrange a meeting with Dr. Fraga so that you understand
what you need to do to complet ethe assignment
|
Grant returned.
Meet with Dr. Fraga. |
|
Week 14
|
Make sure you continue working on your grant
with your partner. |
Nothing due but arrange a meeting with Dr. Fraga |
| Week 15 |
Finals week |
Monday-Tuesday:
meetings for grant. Final version of grant due on Thursday
by 5:00 PM. |

to Grant Tips
Assignments 1-5
should be done individually. During week four we will
identify who will be partners for the grant project. However,
I want assignment
4 and 5 to be written individually so that I can assess the
writing skills of each partner. The grant (assignment 6) can
be done
in
pairs but throughout the assignment I will ask who wrote what
and what each individual's contribution was. You will be required
to evaluate your partner at the end of the assignment.
I will require that
all drafts be collected in one notebook to be handed in at the
end of the year. You should include all reviewer's comments and
any responses you may have had to those comments. In addition,
I request that you keep all of your collected materials in a separate
notebook so that I can review it.
Copies
of the previous year's grants are available for copying upon request.
