What should be in my lab notebook?

The lab notebook will be checked at random intervals.

I am asking that you keep a dated and detailed notebook for the laboratory portion of this class. It should be a standard notebook such as can be obtained at the bookstore. It should not a three ring binder nor have loose paper stuck in it. The lab notebook should provide detailed information about the experiments you conducted in class. The types of things I will be looking for are:

  • consistent entries
  • dated entries
  • complete entries
  • raw and summarized data where appropriate
  • protocols that can be read and followed

In addition, I will be looking for specific elements that reflect the experiments we will be cinducting in class. The specific elements I will be looking for in the notebook when I evaluate it will be

  • First experiment: Should have a detailed summary of how RNA was isolated and the PCR reaction conducted.
  • Second experiment: Detailed proptocol for RNAI and your assay. Diary of RNAi experiments with results (raw data and experimental design)
  • Optional experiment: Protocol for RNA isolation and results (raw data, basically yield of RNA isolated). This will be for extra credit. Should include the protocol for real-time PCR and results (raw data)
