Quizzes
At the start of every lab period, except for the first week and when an exam is scheduled, there will be a ten-minute quiz. (Word of advice: Don't be late if you want the full ten minutes.) Material from the previous week, including Assigned Readings and Problem Sets (see below), is fair game.
Only eight quizzes will count; the lowest two grades (including missed quizzes) will be dropped.
The main objective of these quizzes is to provide timely feedback regarding your progress in the course. Consequently, my goal is to return each quiz promptly. In addition, the quizzes should familiarize you with my style of exam questions.
I want you to do well in this course. These quizzes, together with the exams, give you two chances on most topics. Please use them! If you do poorly on a quiz and are struggling, please seek help immediately (after the exam, it's too late!) from me or a teaching assistant.
Exams
The exams will be held in Mateer 305 on the date indicated on the Exam Schedule. Two hours will be available to complete the exam (although most students should finish in less than an hour and a half).
If you are unable to take an exam due to an immediate illness, you must contact me before the exam begins. If necessary leave a message, including the date and time, at my phone number (263-2026). If you are unable to take an exam due to other conflicts, you must indicate your request for rescheduling at the class lecture prior to the exam. In both cases, it is imperative that you schedule a makeup exam to be taken within 36 hours of the originally scheduled time. Note: No make-ups will be given for the final exam!
Laboratory Assignments and Participation
All laboratory instructions are available in the Bio 306 HyperText Lab Manual (available at the Bio 306 Web site at http://www.wooster.edu/biology/wmorgan/bio306/ ). The specific assignment varies with each laboratory investigation, but in general you will be required to prepare a partial or complete lab report according to the guidelines described in Pechenik's A Short Guide to Writing about Biology (see below). Assignments will typically be completed individually, but in some cases you may be able to complete lab reports in collaboration with a colleague. As with Independent Study, your laboratory grade is based on method (how your work is performed), content (of the lab report), and form (how it is presented in the lab report).
Regular participation in the classroom and the laboratory is expected of every student. Failure to participate in class and laboratory exercises may negatively influence your final grade.
