By the end of this laboratory exercise, you should be able to...
In upcoming lectures, we will review the Chromosome Theory of Inheritance which postulates that genes reside on chromosomes. A thorough understanding of chromosome maneuvers during mitosis and meiosis will enhance your appreciation of the first physical evidence for Mendel's hypothetical hereditary factors. This laboratory workshop provides a forum for renewing your acquaintance with the processes of nuclear division.
Read "Cell Division" (p. 91-101) in Chapter 4 of Modern Genetic Analysis before lab. (You will also find it useful to bring your textbook for reference during this laboratory exercise.)
You will be evaluated with a quiz at the next lab session.
The laboratory directions were excerpted and modified from Investigating Biology, 2nd ed.by J.G. Morgan and M.E.B. Carter (1996).
