Mitosis and Meiosis Workshop

Objectives

By the end of this laboratory exercise, you should be able to...

• describe (with diagrams) the nuclear division processes of mitosis and meiosis;
• compare and contrast the essential features of mitosis and meiosis; and
• describe when mitosis and meiosis occur in the haploid, diploid, and "alternation of generations" life cycles.

Introduction

In upcoming lectures, we will review the Chromosome Theory of Inheritance which postulates that genes reside on chromosomes. A thorough understanding of chromosome maneuvers during mitosis and meiosis will enhance your appreciation of the first physical evidence for Mendel's hypothetical hereditary factors. This laboratory workshop provides a forum for renewing your acquaintance with the processes of nuclear division.

Read "Cell Division" (p. 91-101) in Chapter 4 of Modern Genetic Analysis before lab. (You will also find it useful to bring your textbook for reference during this laboratory exercise.)
