Brief History

The College of Wooster, founded in 1866, is one of the nation's finest private liberal arts colleges. Wooster's rich tradition of academic excellence has been established through its commitment to guiding carefully selected undergraduates in an intellectual adventure that seeks to understand the unknown, to develop lasting values, and to deepen human understanding. Although many distinctive characteristics set the College apart on the American education scene, some of the most obvious features include the coherence and diversity of the curriculum and the accessibility of resources to students.

Independent Study

At Wooster, Independent Study is the culmination of every student's liberal arts education and provides a basis for independent learning throughout life. In the senior year all students spend two semesters immersed in a major investigative or creative project which results in a written thesis or in a public recital, exhibition or theatrical production. Each student is assigned a faculty advisor, who acts as a mentor, guide and critic. An oral exam at the end of the process emphasizes verbal communication of the student's intellectual and creative ideas.

Whether a student plans to enter the working world or attend graduate school, the Independent Study experience is a valuable asset. Research, writing, analytical and problem-solving skills, the imagination to design a project, and the self-assurance that comes from pursuing an Independent Study project to completion are all skills valued highly by employers and graduate schools. Years after completing their own I.S. projects, Wooster graduates with careers in such diverse fields as business, social service, law, medicine, education, and the arts single out I.S. as a major contributing factor in their success.
