LeRoy W. Haynes, Professor of Chemistry Emeritus, is a native of Long Island, New York. He received his B.A. from Drew University in 1956 and his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in 1961. His research interests include synthesis and reactions of organic heterocyclic compounds, identification of insect pheromones, and the isolation and characterization of compounds from plants. Roy has taken research leaves at the University of Texas, Cornell University, The University of Iowa, The Ohio State University, Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center, and the USDA Laboratory in Gainesville, Florida. He enjoys sailing, sailboarding, and cross country skiing. Roy is a long-time member of the choir at The First Presbyterian Church of Wooster and has served on various church committees. He was on the board of Wee Care, a non-profit pre-school, for two terms. Roy retired at the end of the 1998-1999 academic year after teaching at Wooster for 38 years. During the Fall Semester of 2000, Roy agreed to come out of retirement to teach a lecture section of Organic Chemistry I (211) and supervise two afternoons of 211 laboratory. In addition, he taught Energy Sources (Chemistry 202) during the 2002 summer session and Chemistry and the World in Which We Live (Chemistry 101), primarily as a laboratory course, during the 2005 summer session. He served as director of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute 2007 summer research program. Recent Publications: Pett, Virginia B.; Haynes, LeRoy W.
